Helping Kids Understand Their Feelings Through Art and Music

In Kuala Lumpur, our young students recently joined a creative session led by Dana, one of our dedicated volunteers who has a background in psychology. The goal was simple: to help children understand their emotions and learn healthy ways to express them through art and music.

During the class, the children looked through a list of common emotions and shared when they had felt them, such as feeling angry after arguing with a sibling or happy while playing with friends. They then listened to music, danced, and explored how sound can match or shift a mood.

One of the most memorable activities involved coloring an outline of a person. Each child used colors to show where they felt certain emotions in their body. Some colored their eyes blue for sadness, while others added pink to their chest to represent love. Laughter and chatter filled the room as they compared drawings and talked about instruments their families play.

By the end of the session, the children had practiced identifying their feelings and connecting them to words, colors, and movement. These small steps are part of HOPE’s ongoing effort to strengthen emotional awareness and mental health education for children across Malaysia.

We are grateful to Dana and all our volunteers who continue to make these meaningful learning experiences possible.
