Bridging knowledge during MCO as volunteer teachers switch to online teaching

Necessity is the mother of Innovation. During this MCO, though we can’t have our BLP Advanced Speech Class at our centre, thanks to our dedicated volunteer teachers who continue coaching our youths by using Zoom, a visual software, once a week on Saturday, from 1 pm to 3 pm.

A little background about our Education Programs:
HOPE worldwide Malaysia has been conducting various Education programs (through the help of our volunteers and funding from corporate donors) for children and youth from low-income families, learning for free during the Saturdays. Besides the BLP Advanced Speech Class, we have MY Reading Program, Creative Art Program and STEAM Robotics Education Program. The Education Programs are platforms that kept us connected with these children and youths.

Since the MCO is implemented, we missed our kids dearly and our kids missed us too! Hence, when the volunteer teachers suggested conducting the Speech Class via Zoom, the Youths overjoyed with great anticipation!

Our first Speech Class started since 11 April and we had a great time learning about the definition of Social Distancing.

In addition to instilling knowledge, our volunteers also discuss with the youths about what’s going on in the country right now. This helped our youths to think critically. Our subsequent class also was given the youth a platform to talk about the influence of social media.

Since the first session, now our youths are always looking forward to the weekend, as they can continue to learn and brush up their presentation skills. One of the best parts of the Speech Class was the breakout room session via Zoom, where the volunteer will spend one-on-one coaching time, discuss with them the questions from the passage.

Our gratitude goes to our volunteer teachers: Andal, Kaldip, Manju, Farah, Geetha, Ooi and Eric. Thank you for your kind gesture and your precious time spent with the youths and continue to be with them in their learning journey. Our youths are so blessed to have you all!
