In August, Arup hosted two exciting STEM Outreach Workshops designed to engage and inspire students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These hands-on workshops provided participants with a unique opportunity to learn about engineering principles and apply them in a fun and interactive environment.

The first workshop began with an engaging introduction from Arup staff, who shared insights into the company’s mission and various innovative projects. Participants were given an overview of Arup’s commitment to sustainable development and its role in shaping the built environment.
The focus then shifted to the theory behind STEM, particularly in engineering and building construction. Students explored key concepts, such as structural integrity, materials science, and the importance of teamwork in engineering projects. This foundational knowledge set the stage for the practical applications they would encounter in the following workshop.

The second workshop built on the excitement from the first, starting with another warm welcome from Arup staff. This time, the focus was on a thrilling competition that challenged students to put their newly acquired knowledge to the test.
Participants were tasked with designing and constructing a model building using wooden sticks and strings, with the primary goal of creating a structure that could withstand simulated earthquake conditions. This hands-on activity encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving as students collaborated in teams to develop their designs.

Once the models were completed, they were subjected to a quake simulation test to see which building could endure the shaking. The tension in the room was palpable as teams eagerly awaited the results. The winning structure was celebrated, and all participants gained valuable insights into the complexities of building design and the importance of engineering in creating safe and resilient structures.

Both workshops concluded with a time of food and sharing, where students had the opportunity to reflect on their experiences. This informal setting fostered connections among participants and allowed them to discuss their favorite moments from the workshops. Arup staff members were also on hand to share their own experiences in the engineering field, offering valuable advice and encouragement to the aspiring engineers in attendance.
The Arup STEM Outreach Workshops were a resounding success, providing students with a meaningful introduction to the world of engineering and construction. Through interactive activities and discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of STEM concepts and the vital role they play in shaping the built environment.
As Arup continues to inspire the next generation of engineers, it remains committed to fostering a passion for STEM education and encouraging students to explore the limitless possibilities within these fields. We look forward to seeing the creative innovations that future workshops will inspire!
